In honor of Black History Month and in connection with our 4th annual FOSDP Presents The Dream Builders Awards Luncheon which will take place Saturday, October 15, 2016. We wanted to share some extraordinary Dream Builders throughout history who have paved the way for so many Americans today.
George Washington Carver was born into slavery, January 1864 in Diamond Missouri. George was a scientist, inventor, botanist, painter and teacher; who is the sole reason we have peanut butter, pecan pie and sweet potato pie.
George Washington Carver was born into slavery, as a result, he witnessed firsthand the tragedies that come with hate and racism. When George was 15 years old he witnessed a black man being lynched. The lynching he witnessed had a profound influence on his life and stayed with him for many years. “As young as I was the horror hunted, me and does even now.” Gary R. As a scientist, George worked with crops such as peanuts, soybean, pecans and sweet potatoes. He was considered a scientific expert, and he is credited with inventing several products such as plastics, paints, dyes and a kind of gasoline. In December 1947, George created a museum devoted to his work but a fire broke out in the museum and destroyed most of his collection. George Washington Carver, throughout his life, experienced many difficult moments’ moments that would probably break the average man or woman. George in spite of having a life with so many ups and downs found a way to survive and create a lasting legacy. George’s scientific work changed the earth for the better. George is a Dream Builder because his ideas provided a blueprint for future generations. His life should inspire anyone who is facing difficult times to persevere, create a plan and keep going.
